World Envirnment Day (2007)

World Environment Day is held each year on 5 June to increase public knowledge about environmental issues and promote greater understanding about the environmental problems facing future generations. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, World Environment Day is an international day of community-led activities such as car-free street rallies, green concerts, tree planting, recycling and clean-up campaigns.

The theme for World Environment Day 2007 is climate change in the polar regions with the slogan being Melting Ice – a Hot Topic! Of course climate change will affect all communities and at Newcastle Green Festival we will be highlighting the environmental problems being caused by our everyday actions and lifestyle changes that could help to minimize those impacts.

Newcastle Council works hard to promote World Environment Day and this year, will be holding a range of events throughout the week. On World Environment Day a climate change dome and a ‘future proof’ climate change garden will be erected at the Monument. The week’s events will culminate in Newcastle Community Green Festival on 9th and 10th June and look certain to be a week of exciting celebrations to help people learn how to take positive action for a safer and more prosperous future.

Enjoy!
