Get the Green Festive Spirit!
With an audience in excess of 12,000 Newcastle Community Green Festival is now the UK’s largest free environmental and music festival and, this year, members of the public are being offered an opportunity to help run and steward this event. With an audience in excess of 12,000 Newcastle Community Green Festival is now the UK’s largest free environmental and music festival and, this year, members of the public are being offered an opportunity to help run and steward this event.

Taking place in Leazes Park on June 9 and 10, it will be the premier event climaxing a week of activities celebrating UN World Environment Week featuring a packed slate of a music, arts, health and environmental activities.

Volunteers Coordinator, Ellie Coakley, said that the festival has been “rightly dubbed” by the press as Newcastle’s ‘Mini Glastonbury’ but what was more important is that the event is organised solely by volunteers.

“We need keen and enthusiastic stewards and event organisers.  Volunteers up for a challenge can help organise activities at the Festival and, for those of a more relaxed nature, we need event stewards to help set up and run the event.  Volunteers can get plenty of experience to match their skills – from fund-raising, marketing and event organising to litter picking and trench digging!  All volunteers get a free meal ticket and a beer or drink token.  So if you feel you’ve got what it takes to help run this excellent event then please contact us.”

Now in its 13th year, the main aim of the festival is to raise awareness about green and ethical issues through a free weekend of fun-filled activities for adults and children of all ages and cultures. Saturday June 9 is family and no-alcohol day from noon to 6 pm and Sunday is the main exhibition day from noon until 10 pm.

"Most of our environmental impact as consumers comes from just three everyday decisions – how we run our homes, what food we eat and how we get around. We will be demonstrating how going green in our lifestyle choices can be smart, stylish and easy. With a wide selection of the best solutions available - from vegetarian food, recycling, green energy and even a vehicle converted to run off vegetable oil - there'll be plenty to see and do,” said Event Organizer, Phil Capon.

This year’s carbon-neutral festival will feature 90 bands on six music stages, fair ground rides, and more than 100 exhibits, popular arts, craft and numerous other activities.  The entertainment will include free hands-on workshops learning about Newcastle’s wide range of traditional and world-wide crafts, heritages, cultures and arts.

For keep fit enthusiasts, there will be free keep fit, yoga, martial arts, dance, and sporting activities and for those in need of a bit of pampering, there will be taster sessions of alternative healing therapies.

All food will be vegetarian or vegan and, as well as local and organic. A nutrition expert will be on hand to give the very best advice on healthy eating.  On the Sunday, there will also be a fine selection of the best organic, vegan-friendly and locally produced ales and beer on offer.

About a quarter of the heat lost from the average home is through the roof (TimesOnline - December 13 2006). Insulation of roofs, walls, floors, chimneys, letter boxes, doors and windows can all be cost effective measures for preventing heat loss and locally sourced and natural materials are the most environmentally friendly.
